Description:

In this interactive escape room game made in Twine, the player must make their way through a network of connected rooms in order to escape. Puzzles and branching routes that lead to one of several potential exits are encountered by players throughout the game. The player's path and ultimate result are directly impacted by choice making. The game challenges players to think critically as they navigate the maze by emphasizing exploration, problem-solving, and meaningful decisions.

Development Process:

The development process began with outlining the game's basic structure and emphasizing how the rooms would link and the decisions that would drive the plot. I made sure that every choice point had repercussions or changed the possible routes in the seven rooms, each with its own special interactions or puzzle. Inspired by ideas in Zubek's Elements of Game Design, I used narrative patterns like hub-and-spoke architecture and branching narrative. Before being developed in Twine with variables to track player choices, inventory, and room navigation, the plot and logic were laid out using flowcharts. In order to ensure that players would feel both tension and agency as they advanced toward one of the game's various endings, I modified the game's flow throughout testing to strike a balance between challenge and clarity.
